Roki Sasaki reportedly declined an offer from the Chiba Lotte Marines. The 23-year-old has long been a target of MLB teams, but he hasn't posted yet. He still may not since he's just 23 years old, but there's a chance he makes his way to America after declining a Japanese contract.
If that's what happens, a bidding war for his services will ensue like it did for Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Sasaki is younger and perhaps more highly-touted, so he could be signed to a massive contract after multiple teams throw huge offers at him.
The Los Angeles Dodgers signed Yamamoto, outbidding both New York teams. They won the World Series and also have Shohei Ohtani. Their location is ideal for Japanese players since it's close to home. This all gives them a chance to sign Sasaki, even if they've already spent an impressive amount on their current roster.
If that happens, MLB fans are going to be upset. They're already fearful of a potential Ohtani, Yamamoto and Sasaki trio in the Dodgers' rotation and he hasn't even posted yet.
"He wants to be a Dodger so bad he can taste it!!" one exclaimed.
"Dodgers with Ohtani, Yamamoto. 10 y/450M," one predicted.
"He wants that World Series with LA," another added.
"Can’t really imagine him choosing Padres over the Dodgers especially when they just won the World Series along with all the history," one said.
Most fans agree that the Dodgers are the favorites to sign Sasaki should he post.
Roki Sasaki's next team odds explored
Unsurprisingly, the odds seem to agree with fan sentiment. Roki Sasaki has the highest odds of being a Los Angeles Dodgers ace should he head over to the MLB this winter.
Per Bookies, they're +350 to land the ace. The other teams aren't far behind, though:
- Arizona Diamondbacks, +500
- San Diego Padres, +500
- New York Mets, +650
- Boston Red Sox, +750
- New York Yankees, +800
- Seattle Mariners, +1200
Expect all these teams and potentially more to get involved in the bidding war. It's rare for a pitcher so young to be available to any team, let alone one as talented as Sasaki.
