On Wednesday, Los Angeles Dodgers President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman started the introductory press conference of Roki Sasaki, who, as an international free agent, signed with the club, after being posted by his former team in the NPB, Chiba Lotte Marines.
Friedman shared the organization's journey and determination in bringing Sasaki into the fold.
"This is truly an exciting moment for the Los Angeles Dodgers organization, as well as for our fans in Los Angeles and all over the world," Friedman said as he introduced Sasaki.
He also shed light on the journey to signing Sasaki, which began six years ago.
"Our journey to this moment began six years ago when Galen Carr, Ishmael Cruz, John Diebel and the rest of our Pacific Rim scouts had the privilege of watching Roki pitch in high school in Ofunato," Friedman said in the press conference via Dodgers Nation. "Even then, his explosive fastball, pinpoint command, and poise beyond his years stood out.
"Roki has gone on to set records and make an indelible mark on the international stage, and we couldn’t be more excited about this partnership with him. Roki, we are honored and thrilled to have you join the Dodgers family. You will not only add to our rich legacy, but you will also play an instrumental role in helping us write the next chapter in Dodgers history," he added.
Roki Sasaki reveals if Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto's influence played a part in his decision to sign with Dodgers
Roki Sasaki is a long way from home. He came to the majors at just 23 years old, something Shohei Ohtani did a long time ago before he signed with the LA Angels.
After the Dodgers emerged as winners in his sweepstakes, many assumed Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto's presence may have played a big part in his decision-making.
“It wasn't a priority to me if there was or was not a Japanese player on a team as I was looking at all the teams,” Sasaki said in the press conference. “Being able to play with Ohtani and Yamamoto, both exceptional players, I'm really looking forward to playing with them, and not just them, but the rest of the team that is incredible as well.”
Those signed through international free agency, most of the time, have to grind through the minors before reaching the big leagues. However, there is a good chance, the Dodgers will have Sasaki in their pen from Day 1 of the regular season.
