On Wednesday, MLB analysts Jeff Blair and Kevin Barker along with San Diego Padres insider Ben Higgins talked about San Diego's 2024 season and potentially winning its division. The Padres are competing for the NL West title with the LA Dodgers.
The Friars have been in fine form over the last few months of the season and punched their ticket to the playoffs with a 4-2 win over the Dodgers on Tuesday. They emphatically ended the game with an amazing triple play just as their opponents were looking to rally in the ninth inning. With a 91-67 record, San Diego is on top of the NL Wildcard standings with four games left in the regular season.
On Thursday's episode of "Blair and Barker," Higgins talked about how the Padres winning the division title over the Dodgers would be the "ultimate accomplishment."
"[36:45] We (San Diego) have always wanted to get the best of the Dodger," Higgins said. "They like to act like they're the big brothers, we're the little nobodies down south."
"If they (San Diego) can win the division after the Dodgers went out and spent a billion dollars to get Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and the Padres had to scale back, it would be one of the ultimate regular season accomplishments, to do it this year."
Shohei Ohtani bats in two as Padres fall to Dodgers in Game 2
The LA Dodgers came back in the series against the San Diego Padres with a 4-3 win at Dodger Stadium on Wednesday. The home team's bullpen played a crucial role as it held an in-form visiting offense at arm's length in the later innings of the game which allowed the Dodgers to hold on to their one-run advantage.
Shohei Ohtani continued his exceptional season as he guided his team to victory with two more RBIs. He also delivered two clutch hits to give his team the go-ahead run on two separate occasions. His second hit ultimately proved to be the difference on the day.
The two teams will face off one last time in the rubber game on Thursday, as they continue to fight tooth and nail for the NL West crown.
