The New York Yankees did what they needed to do in Game 4, and will hand the ball to Gerrit Cole in Game 5 to once again stave off elimination in the World Series. Every game is a must-win, and the Yankees are turning to their ace. Their former hitting coach is hyped for the game and excited to see Cole in this situation.
Sean Casey, who spent the second half of 2023 with the Yankees, talked about the team's chances during Tuesday night's episode of "The Mayor's Office" podcast:
"The odds of winning this series are not in your favor, but that's irrelevant," Casey said. "What's relevant is, gotta win tonight. Coming into five, you got one of the best pitchers in baseball stepping up."
Casey believes Yankees manager Aaron Boone told his players to prepare to fly once more to LA since they have Cole on the mound in Game 5.
"On the flip side, Dave Roberts and his guys are like, 'It's tough to win four in a row against anybody,' Casey said."... They're not panicked... The Dodgers are going to be ready for Game 5, they do not want to go back to LA. They will be coming out guns blazing ready to go."
What was once a highly disappointing series has suddenly turned and has the potential to continue turning on Wednesday night, and Casey is excited for what's to come.
Luke Weaver anticipates big Gerrit Cole outing
Gerrit Cole was signed to his massive contract for a reason, and that was to pitch the New York Yankees to World Series titles. He will be on the mound for the last time this season, barring an appearance in a theoretical Game 7.
Star closer Luke Weaver is confident that Cole will do his best on Wednesday night. After Game 4, he said via ESPN:
"When you have a top dog like that and he voices it, that's what it feels like to me for (Game 5)," Casey said. "You feel like they step up in big moments. He's got a different side to him, and when he gets into that killer mode like he did, it's going to be a pretty tough task."
The Yankees will need top-notch pitching from both Cole and Weaver to extend the series and force it to go back to Los Angeles.
