The Los Angeles Dodgers had a tough night on Tuesday as the New York Yankees rebounded to win Game 4 of the World Series. Early in the game, tensions escalated due to an incident in the first inning involving Mookie Betts and a Yankees fan in the right-field stands.
New York's leadoff hitter Gleyber Torres hit a 1-0 pitch toward right field off Dodgers pitcher Ben Casparius. The ball was caught by Betts right in front of the fence. However, in an unusual turn, a fan in the stands tried to take away the ball from Betts' hands, clutching onto his wrist and trying to pry it open to snatch the ball. The fan's companion tried to assist by pushing away Betts' other arm.
The umpiring crew quickly intervened, ruled it fan interference and called Torres out. Betts appeared visibly upset as he returned to his position.
After the game, Mookie Betts was asked about the incident and downplayed it, saying he and the team would look to finish the job on Wednesday.
"It's irrelevant. We lost, [it] doesn't matter," Betts said. "When it comes to the person to blame, it doesn't matter. We lost, it's irrelevant. I am fine, he's fine everything's cool. We lost the game, that's what I'm focussed on. Turn the page and get ready for tomorrow."
The fan was ejected after the incident.
Mookie Betts and Dodgers expected Yankees to show up on Tuesday
Mookie Betts was also asked about his thoughts on the Bombers finding life and forcing a Game 5 on Wednesday. The former AL MVP said the Dodgers expected the Yankees to show resiliency.
“They’re going to fight,” Betts said about the Yankees. “If you made it this far, you have a resilient team that’s going to fight the whole time.”
If the Yankees manage another win on Wednesday, they would become the first team in history to force a Game 6 after going 0-3 down in the Fall Classic.
