Of all the sacred cows that were placed in Donald Trump's crosshairs during the election, the MLB establishment was not expected to be among them. However, in the dying days of the campaign, that's exactly who Trump went after.
Early Wednesday morning, Trump was elected the 47th President of the United States. Formerly the president from 2017 until 2021, Trump defeated incumbent Vice President Kamala Harris. Though immigration, the economy and democracy ranked at the top of voter's minds, the free-wheeling Trump took aim at both MLB and NFL at a campaign rally on Monday night in Pennsylvania.
"Baseball doesn't seem to be quite what it was. We gotta do something about that... Too many stations, too many games, too late at night. They should hire me as commissioner. Although I like their commissioner, I do." - Donald Trump" - Awful Announcing
At the Pittsburgh rally, Trump slammed MLB for having "too many stations, too many games, too late at night." before claiming that he should be hired as commissioner. The 78 year-old billionaire didn't reference commissioner Rob Manfred by name but conceded that he "likes" the league's top executive, who has served in the role since 2015.
As of Wednesday, the clip has been viewed over 330,000 times.
Unfortunately for Manfred, Donald Trump is far from the only voice who has called his administration out. Before the 2022 season, Manfred greenlighted some sweeping changes to the game, making him plenty of enemies among fans, players and coaches.
"Donald Trump has won the Presidential election" - Crazed
In addition to restricting defensive shifts, mandating bigger bases, Manfred's infamous pitch clock has been one of the most divisive issues in modern baseball. The 66 year-old has also drawn criticism for redrawing the MLB scheduling format, meaning that NL teams see AL teams far more than they did before.
Donald Trump has been a lifelong baseball enthusiast
In his younger days, Trump was an avid baseball player and a fan of the sport. He wrote in 2004:
“I was supposed to be a pro baseball player, at the New York Military Academy, I was captain of the baseball team. I worked hard like everyone else, but I had good talent."
Certainly the most polarizing political voice in a generation, President Trump has already hinted about settling old scores during his term. As Manfred continues to catch criticism for his sweeping changes to baseball, it looks like those who dissent from the commissioner's changes can count the most powerful man among them.
