The New York Mets witnessed one of their worst fears come true tonight in the World Baseball Classic when closer Edwin Diaz suffered a serious leg injury during the celebration after Puerto Rico defeated the Dominican Republic 5-2 to advance from Group D to the quarter-finals.
Edwin Diaz fell to the ground and was helped off the field in a wheelchair after being attended to. Undoubtedly, this marks the end of his World Baseball Classic, and the wait for updates on his health ahead of the upcoming MLB season has begun.
Andy Martino of SNY reported that doctors were examining Diaz at LoanDepot Park in Miami, the site of the Puerto Rico-Dominican Republic game. There was no word on his condition at the time.
The injury occurred a day after Dodgers first baseman and Canada representative Freddie Freeman was removed from the game with a hamstring issue. The move turned out to be precautionary.
This injury looked much more serious. Diaz was surrounded by his Puerto Rico teammates near the mound and his brother Alexis Diaz, a reliever for the Reds, was in tears.
Diaz was spectacular with the Mets last season, recording 32 saves with a 1.31 ERA and 118 strikeouts in 62 innings pitched. He signed a five-year, $100 million contract earlier in the offseason.
What does Edwin Diaz’ injury mean to the NY Mets?
The Mets will undoubtedly be concerned about Diaz’ condition and the impact it could have on their upcoming season.
Losing a key player like Diaz for any amount of time would be a major blow to the team's hopes of success. Hopefully, he recovers quickly and can return to the field as soon as possible.
