The Chicago Cubs are in the dilemma of whether to buy, sell or hold ahead of the July 30 trade deadline. According to Jim Bowden of The Athletic, Colorado Rockies catcher Elias Diaz has caught the attention of the Cubs.
The Cubs aren't in a great place (46–51), as pundits questioned if players like Cody Bellinger and Jameson Taillon would stay with the Cubs even after the trade deadline. However, if they decide to be buyers, then Jim Bowden believes Diaz is their best bet right now.
"They know if they acquire a better offensive catcher, they could be formidable as they do have starting pitching that’s capable of running the table in October. They’ve been linked with the Rockies in a possible deal for catcher Elias Díaz," Bowden said.

Notably, Elias Diaz has gotten a bit slow after his great run in the early games. He's still slashing .296/.340/.417 this season and would be a great add-on for any team interested in him. Diaz holds a 97 wRC+, which would be an instant improvement over Tomas Nido (56 wRC+) and Miguel Amaya (48 wRC+).
Elias Diaz seen as potential fit for the New York Yankees and San Diego Padres, claims Insider
The San Diego Padres are reportedly considering a trade for Colorado Rockies catcher Elias Díaz, according to MLB.com insider Mark Feinsand. As the trade deadline approaches, the Padres seek reinforcements to make a deep run in the postseason.
Feinsand mentioned that even though Diaz suffered a calf strain last month, which had him scratched for almost three weeks, Diaz was stellar on his return.
"He’s hitting .306 with a .790 OPS this season, and with less than $3 million owed to him before he hits free agency this offseason, the 33-year-old could be one of the few impactful catchers moved this month," writes Feinsand of Elias Diaz.
On a different note, he also added the New York Yankees as a potential fit for the star catcher.
The duo of Jose Trevino and Austin Wells has been a treat for the Yanks defensively this season. Their combined fWAR of 2.3 ranks a solid sixth in all of baseball, according to FanGraphs. But while the defense is sturdy, manager Aaron Boone might need more manpower behind the plates. Elias Diaz could just be the right man for the job.
