During the 1986 season, New York Mets manager Davey Johnson had a tough situation on his hands. Four of his players were arrested in July during a scuffle with off-duty police officers who were working security at a bar.
Ron Darling, Bob Ojeda, Rick Aguilera, and Tim Teufel were all arrested. They were released the following day in time for the club's game against the Houston Astros.
Johnson enforced a fine on all four players for breaking curfew. He then enforced a ban on the bar for all of his players, via the New York Times' Michael Martinez.
"My main rule is, 'Don't embarrass me or the ball club.' This is embarrassing to the club, to their families and to me, so I'm forced to fine them," Johnson said.
The players involved declined to comment on the incident with the advice of their attorney. However, a statement was made on their behalf to clear the air a bit.
"The four players involved in the incident would like it made public that they feel they were unduly assaulted by police personnel on the scene and that one of the players, Tim Teufel, was in fact severely beaten by police" said team official Jay Horwitz through attorney Dick DeGuerin.
Teufel was reported to have a large red welt on his upper right arm. Darling was reported to have been pushed through a glass window, shattering it.
Davey Johnson and the Mets did not let this incident stop them
While this became a big story, Davey Johnson and the New York Mets did not let it get to them. They finished the 1986 season with a 108-54 record, capturing the National League East and easily making the playoffs.
They kept up that momentum into the postseason and rolled through their competition. NY took down the Astros in the NLCS and was matched up against the Boston Red Sox in the World Series.
Many will remember this series for Bill Buckner's fatal error in Game 6. With Boston up 3-2 in the series, a slowly hit ball to first base went through Buckner's legs, allowing the Amazins to walk it off.
This was a great series as it was a back-and-forth event. Down two games to none in the series, the Mets were able to defeat Boston and capture their second World Series title.
