Errant pitch provokes shock, bloodies Boston Red Sox hitter Justin Turner

Fans were in shock after viewing a video involving Justin Turner of the Boston Red Sox. The incident occurred during a Grapefruit League game between the Red Sox and the Detroit Tigers in Fort Myers, Florida.

Turner was waiting from the 2-1 delivery from Tigers pitcher Matt Manning. However, Manning's pitch went wildly astray and struck Turner hard in the head.

Turner went down immediately and was severely bloodied. The Red Sox training staff rushed to where he writhed in pain. Turner then left the game.

"Oh no no no," Fox Sports reporter Ben Verlander tweeted. "Awful scene in the Red Sox game as Justin Turner gets hit in the head and immediately goes down. He’s been removed from the game. Hoping for the best."

Justin Turner has been in the MLB since 2009. In that time, he has played mainly for the New York Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers.

This offseason, Turner signed a one-year deal worth $15 million. Many Red Sox fans were hoping that he would at least partially fill the infield gap left by the departure of star shortstop Xander Bogaerts.

Fans who watched the video on Twitter have poured out their sympathies for Turner. The video is fairly graphic and looks incredibly painful for Turner.

Some are wondering if this errant pitch might have been a side effect of the new pitch clock. The new rule this season has caught a lot of criticism from players and fans alike. They say that it does not give batters and pitchers enough time to line up properly, and that it causes distractions and can lead to mishaps and injuries.

However, most have discounted Turner's case. It just looks like Manning, a former first-round pick who only has 30 games of MLB baseball under his belt, may have to work hard to make the Detroit Tigers' opening day pitching staff.

Justin Turner's injury leaves question marks for his team

It is not currently known what Turner's injuries are or how much time he will miss. For a team like the Red Sox, who came last in their division last season, they will need all the offensive help that they can get this season.
