The New York Mets signed Juan Soto to a record-breaking 15-year, $765 million contract last month, thereby making the biggest headline of this off-season. The deal is the largest ever completed in the history of professional sports, going past the 10-year, $700 million deferred contract that Shohei Ohtani signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers in December 2024.
Former New York Mets outfielder believes the jaw-dropping contract is only positive for the sport. He said that players like to see teams offering large deals for the top stars. He believes a lot of players have received larger contracts as a result of the Mets acquiring Soto for a jaw-dropping sum, showing that the MLB is in a healthy state financially.
On Wednesday, Mark Canha was a guest on a podcast for the New York Post, hosted by veteran MLB insider Jon Heyman. He was asked to put forth his opinion on Juan Soto signing the blockbuster deal with the Mets.
"I think it's good for him, and it's good for baseball," Canha said. "You like to see money flying around. That's a good thing, and we've seen a lot of big contracts this off-season.
"I can't really decide how it's a bad thing," he added. "Things are going well; things are going good."
Mark Canha had joined the New York Mets on a two-year $26.5 million deal upon reaching free agency in 2022 after spending seven seasons with the Oakland Athletics. The contract was extended by another year, but Canha was shipped off to the Milwaukee Brewers at the trade deadline next year. He joined the Detroit Tigers for the 2024 campaign before being traded to the San Francisco Giants.
More high-profle guys are coming off the board a little sooner: Mark Canha on aftermath of Juan Soto's contract with the Mets
During his appearance on the podcast, Mark Canha discussed the effects of Juan Soto's mega-contract with the New York Mets on the present free agent market situation.
"We could sit here and talk about trickle-down economics, but I'm not smart enough to do that," he said. "I feel like a lot of the more high-profile guys are coming off the board a little sooner. I expect to keep seeing those types of names come up in the near future."
Canha would be hoping that his name also comes off the free agent board within the next couple of weeks.
