The Alex Bregman sweepstakes is heating up and the Boston Red Sox could be the winners. Teams have emerged as suitors for the third baseman and others have seen their interest wane as the reality of what Bregman will cost sunk in.
The Red Sox have been predicted by former MLB general manager Jim Bowden as the landing spot for the two-time All-Star despite having some positional clogs in the way.
"That said, Boston is my favorite spot for Bregman," Bowden said on Monday, via Boston Strong. " ... They need a right-handed power pull hitter, and he would do significant damage to the Green Monster in left field. They could move Rafael Devers to first base and put Triston Casas at DH or they could just put Bregman at second base full-time."
Bowden added that Bregman's leadership and ability to work at-bats would be a massive help for a young Boston team. He also believes the former Houston Astros third baseman could be "the final piece" to get the Red Sox back to the playoffs.
New Red Sox pitcher makes push for Alex Bregman
Longtime LA Dodgers star Walker Buehler is now with the Boston Red Sox and he's not wasting time recruiting more free agents. Despite being on rival franchises (thanks to the 2017 World Series), he remains friends with Alex Bregman and wants to see him in Boston.
"I have certainly made a pitch all over the place for him to come to Boston," Buehler said on Saturday, via NESN. "He and I have been buddies for a long time. We played on Team USA together a little bit in college."
He added that he and Bregman co-own a racehorse.
"I got involved in this horse and there was more of the horse that could have been purchased, so (Bregman was) the one guy I called and he opted in," Buehler said. "The horse won in Santa Anita in its first time with us."
This could be the connection that drives Bregman to join a team that doesn't have a clear opening for him.
