The Philadelphia Phillies are yet to come party this offseason. Other big market teams like the LA Dodgers, New York Yankees, New York Mets, Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays have either made a big splash or are about to. However, the Phillies' cards remain close to their chest and are yet to make a headline-grabbing move.
One rumor circulating widely is that the franchise is looking to trade third baseman Alec Bohm this offseason. The Phillies are reportedly interested in acquiring third baseman Alex Bregman, who's a free agent this offseason. If they are successful in landing the two-time World Series champion, they might use Bohm as a trade chip.
In Friday's edition of "The Phillies Show", former Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. floated a potential trade idea involving Bohm, and the Angels' Mike Trout and Logan O'Hoppe.
"I had a harebrained idea, though, and I don’t even like it, but I’ll throw it out there," Amaro Jr. said (18:25 onwards). "What about getting Logan O’Hoppe back for Alec Bohm and taking on a significant amount of Mike Trout’s contract? A two-for-one deal."
Amaro then gave his reasons for why the trade isn't that far-fetched.
"The Phillies are likely losing J.T. Realmuto after 2025, and this is basically going to be his last year unless they want to re-sign him. Getting Logan O’Hoppe back adds to their young core of players," Amaro added. "They’d also get a great offensive player in Trout if he’s on the field. I like Mike Trout, but I know he’s had a tough time staying healthy, and he’s owed a lot of money.
"Let the Angels pay down a significant part of that contract. The Angels, in turn, would get a good player in Bohm, someone they can hold on to for a couple of years. I don’t know if this idea is realistic, but I’ll toss it out there."
Phillies offered Alec Bohm and Nick Castellanos for Astros star
On Friday, the Houston Astros made a massive move, trading outfielder Kyle Tucker to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for infielder Isaac Paredes, pitcher Hayden Wesneski and a prospect.
Among the teams looking to trade for Tucker was the Phillies, who even made a blockbuster trade offer to the Astros. The Phillies were reportedly willing to give up Alec Bohm and Nick Castellanos in a potential trade for Tucker. However, the Astros rejected the offer.
The Phillies need an all-around slugger who could bat in the middle and provide in the field too. At the moment, they are falling short on multiple fronts.
