The LA Dodgers seem to always get who they want in the offseason. Thanks to the franchise's high payroll and one of the best environments for players starting their careers, Chavez Ravine now hosts multiple stars, including the latest international free-agent signee, Roki Sasaki, who is joining the Dodgers to play alongside fellow countrymen Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
The latest acquisition adds to the Dodgers' already star-studded roster. On the hitting side, Ohtani, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman make up a fearsome trio. On the pitching side, Yamamoto, Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow, leading from the front, make the team nearly unbeatable, according to former Tampa Bay Rays star Carlos Peña.
During his appearance on MLB Network Radio, Peña echoed what Betts said after winning the World Series last season.
"Look, baseball is still a game where you have to go out there and play between the lines," Peña said. "But when you look at this ball club on paper, you’re telling yourself, 'There’s no way they can’t go out there and be successful and win it all—again and again and again.'
"That’s what Mookie Betts alluded to. There’s a very funny clip where he says, ‘Well, you know what, let’s talk in seven years. That’s maybe when we’ll pass the baton.’"
Peña echoed Betts' take that the Dodgers would dominate baseball for the next seven years.
"But for the next seven years, there’s going to be pure dominance out there in the West," Peña said. "Who can beat them? Over the long run, getting through that rotation with that lineup — this team is certainly the best team in all of baseball."
How does the Dodgers' rotation look after addition of Roki Sasaki?
While most international free agents signed in the offseason work their way through the minors, Roki Sasaki is a different breed. There’s a good chance he may skip the minors entirely and be on the active roster from Day 1, according to a report from NBC.
With Sasaki's addition, the Dodgers' rotation is loaded. They will have their 12-year, $326.5 million signee Yoshinobu Yamamoto leading the rotation, alongside two-time Cy Young winner Blake Snell, who signed a five-year deal with the Dodgers this offseason.
Tyler Glasnow, who has recorded the lowest batting average against in the majors over the past five seasons, will be tasked with a spot in the rotation and will be expected to go deep into games.
Moreover, the Dodgers will see the return of two-way star Shohei Ohtani on the mound following his recovery from elbow surgery.
That already makes for a stacked rotation, with the possibility of Clayton Kershaw being added if the club re-signs him this offseason. Additionally, Tony Gonsolin and Dustin May will be ready to step in should an injury occur.
