As Justin Verlander embarks on a new journey with the San Francisco Giants, one former Detroit Tigers teammate compared his personality to Miguel Cabrera from their time together. Cabrera and Verlander played together for a decade with the Tigers, where outfielder Austin Jackson played alongside them.
Speaking on a recent episode of Tiger Territory, Jackson spoke about Cabrera's work ethic and their relationship together:
"In my opinion he is one of, if not the greatest, hitter of his era for sure. I can't say enough about it...this guy was unreal... This dude's work ethic was different and that's what it is. Yes, he was blessed to have the hand-eye coordination better than everybody else but he also put the work in though. It was the work that nobody got to see... His work ethic is up there with the greats."
"Not only was he a great player but me and him got really close during my time there. He was awesome. I think he's a guy that he had to trust you to to kind of let you into his circle and I think I was one of those guys that he let in. We had some really good times together. He's guy that we could vent back and forth to each other, talk about anything. He's a good person," he added.
He went on to explain how Cabrera and Justin Verlander both had different personalities and what it was like to share a clubhouse with both players together:
"Verlander... he puts his headphones on from the time he opened his car door to the time he got in... It's not intimidating, just more of like not as approachable as guy like Miggy... The more I got to know Ver, we developed a coll little bond but Miggy was more approachable, but he was a jokester too." [22:05 - 30:38]
Justin Verlander was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 2004 MLB Draft and went on to make his major league debut with them in 2005. Three years into his MLB career, the Tigers signed Miguel Cabrera, who was one of the best hitters of his generation. Together, they went on to win the World Series and share three AL MVP titles between them.
Projecting the San Francisco Giants rotation after Justin Verlander addition this week
Having signed veteran ace Justin Verlander to their roster, the San Francisco Giants have added an experienced arm to their starting rotation. Despite his struggles with injuries in recent years, he brings a wealth of MLB experience to a rotation that may look like this:
Logan Webb has cemented his place as the first starter and will likely be followed by Robbie Ray to make a righty-lefty combination. Justin Verlander is expected to be an option for the third spot, with competition from Kyle Harrison and Jordan Hicks. All in all, an exciting rotation with plenty of potency.
