New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone called the extra-innings 5-3 loss at home against the Boston Red Sox "extremely tough losses." He believes the team has to get over the bullpen's implosion on Friday and look to win the next game of the series.
Aaron Boone offered his thoughts on the result in the post-match press conference.
"We're going to be tested all the time with tough spots in the season, which clearly we are in right now. And then, obviously, you get extremely tough losses when you are going through it. This falls under that category. We've got to turn the page quickly and try to finish the game off tomorrow," the manager said.
The New York Yankees have been going through a major slump over the past few weeks. The Yankees held a 3-1 lead heading into the ninth inning and were only one strike away from victory when the Red Sox scored a two-run homer to level the game. The visitors added two more runs in the following inning to snatch a 5-3 win over their archrivals.
The Yankees have lost their last four games, equaling the team's longest losing streak this season.
Aaron Boone spoke about base-running blunders against the Red Sox
Aside from the failure of the bullpen to close out the game, the Yankees made basic errors on the basepath, which Aaron Boone was not too pleased about.
Having runners at first and third with only one out, the home team conceded a double play in the third inning that eventually proved quite costly.
Anthony Volpe did not hustle to reach home plate on a soft grounder to first base as he was busy looking at the ball. At the same time, D.J. LeMahieu made minimal effort to avoid a tag at second base. As a result, the Yankees missed out on a potential game-winning run as Volpe could not reach home plate before the final out.
“We gotta play better than that, no question. We certainly understand that and invest a lot in that. We have to play clean baseball, especially when it’s hard and things are hard to come by. So we gotta be better, period,” Boone said.
The Bronx Bombers will play two more games against the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium before heading off to the All-Star break.
