Puerto Rico knocked the much fancied Dominican Republic out of the tournament after their 5-2 win against them. The win demanded some wild celebrations from their team as the Dominicans were billed as the favorites to go all the way. Edwin Diaz seemed to be holding his leg for a long time as the Puerto Rican team huddled around him. Even though it is early to assume, the injury seemed pretty serious looking at the pain Diaz was in. He was carried off the field before being placed on a wheelchair.
Fans were quickly on to the scene as they took to Twitter to show their reactions.
Some fans were concerned about whether MLB teams would be willing to send players over to the WBC after this incident.
New York Mets fans were particularly furious as their star pitcher looked to be in huge discomfort just days before the regular season.
Edwin Diaz's injury has huge ramifications for New York Mets season
Edwin Diaz was arguably one of the best pitchers in the league last season. He is a key component in not just the Puerto Rican roster as they make their way up in the knockout rounds, but also for the New York Mets who are desperate to taste World Series success after spending big on quality players this season.
What Diaz's injury has ensured is all the fans who were getting excited for the World Baseball Classic will be questioning themselves and the idea of this tournament becoming a good PR event for world baseball will start to diminish.
