Edwin Diaz wrote a touching message to the New York Mets faithful after it was announced he would miss the 2023 MLB season.

The 28-year-old went down hurt during Team Puerto Rico's celebrations after their upset over the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic.

Diaz thanked the fans for their prayers and said he was looking forward to getting back to New York with full fitness and representing the Mets again.

"To all my beloved fans, especially the Mets fans, I want to let you know that I am doing well and healing. I feel blessed and grateful for your support with messages and prayers, thank you very much! I can't wait to see you guys in NY again and play those trumpets." - Edwin Diaz

The Twitterati wished him well, with some fans pleased to have heard from their star closer after the injury.

As made reference by Diaz in his post, plenty of fans tweeted their own version of the closer walking out to his fight song during a game.

Edwin Diaz expected to be out for at least eight months

After their huge win against Team Dominican Republic, the Puerto Ricans erupted into celebration with the entire roster on the field. However, after the player huddle cleared, the Mets pitcher was seen holding his leg in anguish. Quite unsurprisingly, Mets fans were distraught after the incident.

Reports confirmed that Edwin Diaz suffered a torn patellar tendon during the celebration. He is very likely to miss the entire MLB regular season with the injury, as he has an eight-month timeline to return to full fitness. In a sped-up recovery process, he will be able to make a return to Mets colors, however, that seems very unlikely and not worth the risk.

Edwin Diaz has been with the Mets since 2019 when he was traded from the Seattle Mariners in a deal also involving Robinson Cano. After three solid seasons, he signed a five-year contract with the Mets worth $102 million, the most valuable contract ever signed by a relief pitcher.

The Mets depended on their star reliever to come up for them as they push for a World Series win. Now, with Diaz being put on the injury list, they will have to look for alternatives to fill the crucial role in their pitching staff.
