The South Koreans put aside the disappointment of not qualifying for the WBC quarter-finals earlier this week with an emphatic win over their counterparts China. This concludes what was otherwise a rather grim international outing at the World Baseball Championship.
They were on it from the get-go as they brushed aside their Chinese opposition with a score of 22-2.
The game ended after five innings, with the mercy rule coming into operation (because Korea held a lead larger than 15 runs through five innings).
"KOREA. This one is final after 5 innings. Korea ends their WBC run in a big way with 22 runs scored, a new WBC record!!!" - FOX Sports: MLB, Twitter
The Koreans clobbered 20 big hits and amassed an astonishing 2 grand slams during the game. While the Koreans finished their campaign on a high (setting a record for the most runs scored and the largest margin of victory in a World Baseball Classic game), baseball fans exploded at the outcome on Twitter.
Padres infielder Kim Ha-Seong was the architect of one grand slam in the WBC rout
San Diego Padres infielder Kim Ha-Seong played an integral role in the dismantling of their Chinese opposition. He landed a knockout punch in the fifth innings.
The architect of their final grand slam, Ha-Seong joined in the fun at the top of the fifth, landing the final blow for a 22-2 advantage. The Padres' man emulated Park Kun-woo's grand slam moments earlier that gave the South Koreans a 18-2 lead.
While this is not the result most Koreans would have hoped for, they can take incredible heart from this final performance and aim to come roaring back next time.
