Pete Alonso was in a cheerful mood on Friday night as the New York Mets returned to winning ways with a 5-1 win on the road against the Los Angeles Angels. The Mets first baseman was delighted to help his team make a winning start to a long road trip, as the Mets look to carry forward their strong momentum from the past month and perform at their best in the closing stages of the season.
Playing a key role in the Mets' 5-1 win, Alonso scored two runs on the night with his 22nd home run of the season, which put his team into the decisive lead. Alonso has hit 215 home runs in his six seasons with the Mets so far, smashing 53 in his debut campaign to win the Rookie of the Year in 2019. He played in his fourth All-Star Game this year despite making a slow start to the campaign.
After the end of Friday's contest, Pete Alonso spoke with SNY TV's Michelle Margaux regarding his contribution to the win.
"I'm feeling really good. I'm just really happy I was able to put in a good swing there. Yeah, it was really good for us to start this long road trip off with a win. It's a big step in the right direction for us," Alonso said.
"Like you said, we had a great previous month, and we're in August now. We're coming down the home stretch, and we want to be able to play our best baseball toward the end of the year," he added.
Alonso is going through a hot patch at the moment after recording his fourth home run in the past nine games. Meanwhile, the Mets have improved their overall record to 58-51 for the season, which keeps them firmly in the Wild Card race.
Pete Alonso and Mets have been surging for past 2 months
The New York Mets had a difficult time in the opening two months of the 2024 season, with the team falling to a 24-33 record by the end of May. Alonso also struggled to make an impact after batting under .240 with 27 RBIs during the same period.
Since then, however, the Mets have been one of the best teams in the MLB, posting a 34-18 record over the past couple of months. Pete Alonso has also been on a strong run during this stretch with a .250/339/.469 slash line and a .809 OPS.
The Mets will take on the Los Angeles Angels again on Saturday for the second encounter of their three-game series at Angel Stadium.
