Fernando Cruz is getting ready for the upcoming season with his new club, the New York Yankees. He was part of the trade that sent Jose Trevino over to the Cincinnati Reds.
He should slide into the Bronx Bombers' bullpen with little trouble. He has a devastating splitter that has become a problem for opposing hitters.
While he has a lot to look forward to, playing for one of baseball's most storied franchises, that is not the only thing on his mind. The hard-throwing righty recently celebrated his 14th anniversary with his wife Omaley.
"There are no words to express how grateful I am to heavenly Father for Your chosen one to live the process of my life and lead me to triumph as He has done. You are your star player for this team. I would choose you in a lifetime again to be my wife. Happy 14th anniversary to the glory and honor of God. I love you" said Cruz.
Cruz posted a touching Instagram post to his wife. There is no denying the tight bond these two share as Omaley has been by Cruz's side for over well over a decade.
Fernando Cruz turned to pitching after fizzling out as a shortstop
Fernando Cruz is heading into his age-35 season while only being in the big leagues for the last three years. This is because Cruz's path to the big leagues was much different than most.
During the 2007 MLB Draft, the Kansas City Royals selected him with their sixth-round pick. He was selected as an infielder and spent the next two seasons in rookie ball. Through 157 games, he hit .277 with just three home runs.
Cruz struggled to get much going and would then convert to trying to become a pitcher in 2011. However, he struggled on the mound too, putting together a 7.99 ERA that year with just 17 strikeouts.
He would bounce from the big leagues, the Can-Am League, and the Mexican League before signing with the Cincinnati Reds in 2022. Cruz would then make his MLB debut on September 1, 2022.
He has found his niche in the sport, but much later than other baseball players have. He will look to help the Yankees to the best of his abilities as they look to return to the World Series.
