After leading the New York Mets to the 2024 NLCS, Francisco Lindor was happy to learn Sean Manaea re-signing with the club on a three-year, $75 million deal. The deal was announced on Friday, pending a physical.
Manaea becomes the fifth free agent signed by the Mets this offseason. Previously, the Mets made a big splash by signing outfielder Juan Soto to a 15-year, $765 million deal, followed by the signings of Frankie Montas ($34 million, two years), Clay Holmes ($38 million, three years) and Griffin Canning ($4.25 million, one year). By the looks of it, they are almost about to bring back first baseman Pete Alonso as well.
Amid the spending spree, no one is seemingly more happy than shortstop and NL MVP finalist Francisco Lindor, who dropped a one-word reaction on Instagram to Manaea's return.
"Bingo," he wrote.
Sean Manaea is coming off a big year, which saw him go 12-6 with a 3.47 ERA in 32 starts. He will look to improve on those numbers next season, and the way ownership is going about this offseason, a deep run in the postseason is on the cards.
Sean Manaea opts Mets over A's as his friend gets second deal
Sean Manaea and Luis Severino spent 2024 together on the Mets. Both declined the respective qualifying offer to become free agents. While the former chose to return to the Queens, the other got the deal rejected by Manaea.
According to the New York Post's Jon Heyman, the Oakland Athletics offered Manaea a franchise-high $67 million deal before signing Severino on the same deal.
"Good for the Mets and Sean Manaea to agree at $75M over three," Heyman wrote via SI.com. "He’d turned down the $67M from the A’s that went to his friend Luis Severino. Manaea’s market was otherwise limited due to the qualifying offer/draft choice, which is valued between $5M and $20M depending on he team."
Severino departs a rotation that now includes Clay Holmes, Frankie Montas, Kodai Senga and David Peterson, If needed, Griffin Canning, Tylor Megill, Paul Blackburn and Jose Buttó could give some starts to the rotation in 2025.
