MLB analysts Sean Casey and Rich Ciancimino talked about the consequences of a potential injury to Francisco Lindor for the New York Mets, as well as their depth and playoff chances. The Mets are currently fourth in the NL wildcard standings.
Casey had a successful big league career and played for the Cleveland Indians (now Guardians), Cincinnati Reds, Pittsburgh Pirates, Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox in his 12-year pro baseball career. He was a three-time All-Star and is in the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame. He also served as coach of the New York Yankees in 2023. Currently, he is an analyst and runs his podcast on YouTube.
On Monday's edition of "The Mayor's Office with Sean Casey," he talked about how a stint on the IL for Francisco Lindor will be a big blow for the Mets, but won't end their playoff hopes.
"[8:46] The Mets have the pitching, if you have the pitching, you can survive. They have the pitching, that means they're in games. As long as you're in games, you need just one big hit."
"If Lindor goes down, it's a chance for Alonso to really step in and say 'okay, I got this'. Because they do have some star power, Alonso's a guy that can carry a team, but losing Francisco Lindor (to injury) will be a huge blow," Casey said.
Francisco Lindor exits game as Phillies break Mets hearts with walk-off win
The Philadelphia Phillies won the rubber game of their series against the New York Mets 2-1 at Citizens Bank Park on Sunday night, as J.T. Realmuto's walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth clinched the series for the hosts. In what was a stellar pitcher's duel, both Christopher Sanchez (Phillies) and David Peterson (Mets) gave up only one run each.
Reportedly suffering from back soreness, Lindor missed the game on Saturday, as Ronald Acuna Jr.'s younger brother Luisangel Acuna Jr. made his big league debut. Despite attempting to play through the injury in Sunday's game, he eventually had to exit the game early and only lasted one inning.
A crucial cog in the Mets machine both offensively and defensively, fans are hoping this does not lead to a long-term stint on the IL for Lindor as his team continues to fight tooth and nail to seal a spot in the playoffs.
