Francisco Lindor was left out of the top three finalists for the Gold Glove at shortstop in the National League. The New York Mets star isn't up for the award, as Dansby Swanson, Ezequiel Tovar, and Masyn Winn got the nods.
Justin Verlander's brother Ben, an MLB analyst, believes this defies logic.
Verlander said (26:23 - 29:12):
"Really, there's just no explanation for this. Francisco Lindor not being a Gold Glove finalist is an absolute joke. It's a joke. Lindor won two Gold Gloves with Cleveland ... comes over to the Mets, plays great defense, has yet to win ... Something fishy is happening."
Verlander believes this was the best defensive season in years, saying there is "no world" where he shouldn't be a finalist at the very least. He continued:
"This is no offense to Ezeqiel Tovar and Masyn Winn, who are the other finalists, but [Francisco Lindor] should be in over both of those guys [Ezeqiel Tovar and Masyn Winn], but he doesn't need to be. Just needs to be in over one."
Lindor ranks second in the NL in Defensive Runs Saved and third in the MLB in Fangraphs' defensive rating. He will not be eligible for a Gold Glove, though Verlander believes that's Dansby Swanson's award to lose at shortstop anyway.
Francisco Lindor opens up on defensive award snub
Francisco Lindor wasn't an All-Star this season, and he's not going to win a Gold Glove. Despite a phenomenal year, he's probably not going to win MVP, either. However, all that matters to the shortstop is the World Series.
He said via the New York Post:
“I had a good defensive year, but I guess there’s other players that had a better defensive year than me. At the end of the day, I’m trying to win a World Series. I’m trying to make it to the World Series and then win it. And I guess hopefully next year I get a chance at [a Gold Glove] again.”
The Mets will resume the NLCS at home tied 1-1 with the Los Angeles Dodgers this evening, and Lindor's focus is on that and not an award snub.
