Dodgers infielder Freddie Freeman showed his appreciation for teammate Jason Heyward's go-ahead three-run home run in the eighth inning, helping the team earn the victory against the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday. The Dodgers won 6-3, having had to come back from a 0-3 deficit.
In the bottom half of the inning, Will Smith was hit by a pitch while Max Muncy earned a walk, setting up pinch hitter Jason Heyward in the center field role to come to the plate. He blasted a 99-mph fastball to the right corner for a 372-foot, three-run home run.
Freeman posted a snap of Heyward trodding the bases on his way to complete the home run on his Instagram story.
In the fourth inning, Gavin Lux and Max Muncy started the scoring with two solo home runs. Mookie Betts then tied the game with an RBI double in the seventh inning. Joe Kelly pitched a scoreless top of the eighth that set up a close finish.
Following Heyward's three-run blast, Daniel Hudson pitched a strong top of the ninth to close the game.
The Dodgers improved to a 75-52 record and took an unassailable series lead against the Mariners. They are 3.0 games ahead of the second-placed San Diego Padres in the NL West standings.
Dave Roberts praises Jason Heyward's pinch-hitting prowess
Dodgers manager Dave Robers was elated when Jason Heyward went yard against Mariners' All-Star closer Andres Munoz. He complimented the team's bench strength, pointing out that Heyward's pinch abilities came in handy.
“He was ready when called upon and came away with a huge hit. That for me was one of the highlights of the season,” Roberts said via ESPN.
Jason Heyward entered the game pinch-hitting for Enrique Hernandez in the outfield, who himself had replaced Kevin Kiermaier earlier in the game. Heyward is batting .208 with 28 RBIs in 63 games played.
