The Detroit Tigers made history, grabbing their first postseason victory in 11 years. Manager A.J. Hinch technically turned pitching and batting chaos in their favor, delivering a sweep against the Houston Astros and securing a spot in the American League Wild Series.
On Aug. 11 earlier this season, the Tigers had a devastating 55-63 record and were 10 games away from a playoff position. At that point, they only had a 0.2% of making it into the postseason. The Tigers went on a 33-13 run since then and went on to sweep the Astros in the Wild Card.
Hinch gave his two cents on the Tigers' remarkable run after the game (via MLB.com):
"I don’t know who,” Hinch told his team before popping champagne bottles in the visitors' clubhouse, “but somebody let the Tigers get hot."
Then, in an interview, Hinch talked about Andy Ibáñez, the only 30-year-old on the team's roster.
"His confidence is key for us," Hinch said, "but our confidence in him is equally important. This is how we’ve done it all year. This isn't a different style because we're in the playoffs or chasing a win."
The Tigers will face their AL Central rivals Cleveland Guardians next in a best-of-five AL Division series, which will take place in Cleveland.
Andy Ibáñez talks about Detroit's achievement this season
Andy Ibáñez hit two RBIs and went 7-for-45 in the final 24 games before the Tigers made it into the postseason. He has been known to stand with the bat at the dugout steps to have a better look at the pitcher, so he could time the pitch.
Ibáñez stood against Josh Hader, fouling three pitches and leaving a ball by timing it perfectly. Then for the fifth pitch, Ibáñez hit it deep into the left-field corner.
"As soon as I made the contact, I was just pushing for the ball to be fair," Ibáñez said via MLB.com. "Most importantly, I was pushing for the runners on the base to go, go, go, go, go.
"As soon as I got to second base, I saw the Tigers fans on top of our dugout, and it was a very touching and emotional moment," he added.
Ibáñez also spoke about how his teammates are like a "band of brothers", always pushing each other to better themselves.
The Tigers will face the AL Central champions, Cleveland Guardians, in the best-of-five ALDS. Game 1 takes place at Progressive Field in Cleveland on Saturday.
