The New York Yankees needed all the support they could get to avoid the sweep in front of their home fans on Tuesday night. Ace pitcher Gerrit Cole received it in plenty from his family as they recreated a heartwarming moment from his childhood.
Cole's wife Amy shared a picture on Instagram of their two sons, Caden and Everett, holding up a sign very similar to something their father was seen holding two decades ago.
"First World Series for these two tonight," Amy captioned her story.
Even though the 6x All-Star was born in California, his father, who was born in Syracuse, passed on the legacy of supporting the club from an early age in his life. The picture of a young Gerrit holding the sign from the 2001 World Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks went viral in 2019 when he signed with the Yanks.
During the presser, Cole even brought the sign with him, although the wear and tear of all those years showed on it.
Gerrit Cole ready to take things one pitch at a time
Before the start of Game 4, Gerrit Cole acknowledged the fact that his team still needed to take out four games against the Dodgers, with the equation not changing much from the start of the World Series.
“Okay, sure, we have to win four,” Cole said before Game 4. “Well, guess what? We had to win four going into Game 1. In that respect, things haven't changed that much. So it's one game at a time, one pitch at a time.”
For Cole to even feature in another start for the Yankees in the Fall Classic, they had to win the game on Tuesday night. They did with an emphatic 11-4 margin leaving their ace to work his magic on Wednesday night. He will be opposed by the Dodgers' Jack Flaherty in a repeat of the series opener.
