The San Francisco Giants failed in their blockbuster pursuit of Japanese superstar Shohei Ohtani in the 2023 offseason. But the Giants got their target in the 2024 season when they signed star shortstop Willy Adames in free agency.
The Giants headed in a new direction after they fired Farhan Zaidi and appointed former All-Star catcher Buster Posey as president of baseball operations in October. Posey marked his arrival by breaking the bank for Adames, signing him on a franchise-record seven-year, $182 million deal in December.
Incidentally, Posey had signed the largest contract in Giants history in 2013 after a $167 million extension. The Giants showed their intent with the statement signing and All-Star outfielder Heliot Ramos got brutally honest on Adames' arrival in San Francisco.
He said on MLB Network Radio:
"He's a great player, the numbers show it obviously. As a person, I got to meet him. We have been hitting this past couple of days together and he's so positive. He's such a good person too. So it's like it's good to have him around. He loves talking hitting. He loves like working on his swing, he loves working on his body and all that.
"He's like a veteran guy, it's something that I look up to, you know, it's something that like I know it will help me throughout the season if I'm slacking. Like I know like he's gonna push me. He's gonna be like 'get your mind right, do this do that,' you know what I'm saying? So I think he's a great player. I think he's a great person and I think we are in a good spot."
Heliot Ramos expected to build on breakout season after Willy Adames' signing
Willy Adames had a career-best offensive output for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2024 and is expected to provide firepower to the Giants roster and strengthening the infield.
While Adames will be expected to replicate his numbers from last season, his new teammate, Heliot Ramos will be expected to improve on his 2024 season with the Giants.
Ramos had a breakthrough season in San Francisco last year as the outfielder slashed .269/.322/.469 with 22 home runs and 72 RBI, earning him a maiden All-Star nod. He would be aiming to establish himself as an offensive force with help from the likes of Willy Adames and Matt Chapman.
