MLB insider recently revealed that a New York Yankees and Gio Urshela reunion could well be on the cards before the trade deadline on July 30. The Yanks did start off great but have fallen hard in the recent games against the Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles, and New York Mets.

After losing Thursday's series opener against the Jays, the Yanks are no longer the leaders of the AL East as the Orioles have overtaken them for that spot. The Yankees still are a safe space but can't afford to lose points and go down even further. GM Brian Cashman might look to bring some solutions from outside before the trade deadline closes at 6:30pm on July 30 to avoid any more slump.

Apart from starters, the Bronx Bombers do need an infielder who can play at 3rd base, especially after Anthony Rizzo got sidelined due to an arm injury and is expected to only return after the next couple of months.

MLB insider Jon Heyman has suggested that the Yankees might look to bring back Urshela, as he fits the infielder requirement perfectly. He has also got the experience of playing as a 3B because he has been playing in that position for his current team, the Detroit Tigers, in the last 47 games of this season.

"The Yankees likely will need infield help as well as bullpen pieces. Gio Urshela could be an option for the Yankees to pursue ahead of the trade deadline," Jon Heyman on possible Yankees and Gio Urshela reunion.

The former Yankee might not have a huge impact on the team currently, as he did during his first stint in the Yanks' clubhouse between 2019-2021. This season for the Tigers, he has a slash line of just .253/.292/.322/.614, along with 2 HR, 20 RBI, OPS+ 74.

However, as per Heyman, if they are looking for a short-term replacement for Rizzo, Urshela would surely be a smart choice for the Yankees as he currently has a single-year contract with the Tigers worth $1.5 million. So the team won't have to spend too much or lose any of their prized prospects to cement this deal.

Gio Urshela returned to Tigers' lineup on Thursday night vs. the Angels

After resting during the day game on Wednesday, Gio Urshela returned to the Tigers lineup during the team's loss against the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday.

Gio was a part of the lineup for nine consecutive games for his side before he took a rest during the day game and was replaced by Matt Vierling at 3B for Wednesday's game. He returned for the Tigers' series opener against the Halos, which they lost 0-5. Urshela was at the 1B during his team's terrible performance last night.

Detroit has had a tough season so far. The team is currently on a two-game losing streak and is standing at the fourth position in the AL Central (37-44), just above the Chicago White Sox who are the bottom of this division with a 22-61 record.
