On Friday, news broke of second baseman Gleyber Torres signing with the Detroit Tigers. Per sources, Torres and the Tigers have agreed to a one-year, $15 million deal.
Torres had a decent 2024 with the Yankees, finishing the regular season with a .257 batting average, 15 home runs and 63 RBIs, winning the AL East division title. After all the formalities for the move were done and dusted, Torres took to Instagram to post a video on Friday of memorable moments from his time in the Bronx, along with a heartfelt message of thanks to the organization, coaches, players and fans.
"Thank you. The Yankees were my family since 2016. A simple boy from Venezuela with great aspirations to play in the most epic city in the world, the Yankees gave me all the love and support I needed to achieve my childhood dream. Wearing pinstripes was an honor for me and my family," part of Gleyber Torres' Instagram post.
Though Gleyber Torres and his team won the pennant and made it to the World Series for the first time since 2009, the season ultimately ended on a disappointing note as the Bronx Bombers were thoroughly outplayed by their NL counterparts, the Los Angeles Dodgers, in the 2024 World Series.
Detroit Tigers reportedly looking to complement Gleyber Torres' acquisition with that of Alex Bregman
With the acquisition of Gleyber Torres, the Detroit Tigers get a player that is quite handy with the bat, with plenty of experience of playing in high-pressure postseason games. With Torres mainly playing at second base during his time with the Yankees, it has been reported that the Tigers are targeting bringing in another highly experienced campaigner at third base.
Per sources, the Detroit Tigers are weighing up the possibility of acquiring free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman this winter. According to Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller, Detroit should even be the favorite to sign Bregman.
The 30-year-old enjoyed a strong regular season with the Houston Astros in 2024, ending the campaign with a .260 batting average, along with 26 home runs and 75 RBIs, en route to the AL West division title.
Bregman was also as reliable as ever in defensive situations, winning his first Gold Glove award in 2024. The top-order hitter also has plenty of experience of getting the job done in the postseason, having won the World Series twice in his career.
