Gleyber Torres played a pivotal role for the New York Yankees' success this season. The team won the highly-competitive AL East and had little trouble in the postseason thus far.
The Bronx Bombers are back in the World Series for the first time since the 2009 season. That was the last time this storied franchise hoisted a WS trophy after taking down the Philadelphia Phillies.
Torres was a big reason why the Yanks cruised past the Cleveland Guardians in the ALCS. He went 8-22 at the plate with two runs batted in and five runs scored.
GM Brian Cashman explained that Torres was one of the best players during that series in a recent airing of MLB's High Heat with Chris "Mad Dog" Russo.
"This guy showed his toughness. He showed up when it counted the most, without a doubt. He might have been our MVP if it wasn't for [Giancarlo] Stanton," Cashman said.
If it were not for the amazing performance Stanton had against the Guardians, all the attention would have been on Torres. However, Stanton hit four monster home runs during the ALCS.
"The stretch he had after the trade deadline is more reflective of the true player he is. He is a he** of a hitting second baseman, and of course, we need everything he's got along with his teammates to get past these Dodgers," Cashman said.
Gleyber Torres and the Yankees looking to stay hot in star-studded series
This World Series could be one for the ages. It involves two of the top teams with arguably the two best players in the game facing off against each other: Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani.
You coud not write the script any better. These are the series that fans dream of, and it would not surprise many if it came down to an all-deciding Game 7.
It is not just Judge and Ohtani as the star power for this match up. You also cannot forget about players like Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, Gleyber Torres, or Juan Soto.
Both the Yankees and Dodgers are pretty evenly matched. They both have a tremendous amount of power throughout their lineup and a tough pitching staff to back that up. Freeman is nursing an ankle injury but is expected to start Game 1. That will be a situation fans will want to keep a close eye on.
