The 2024 season was not kind for Los Angeles Dodgers veteran Clayton Kershaw. He struggled to stay healthy, dealing with a bone spur in his big toe and a torn meniscus in his left knee which both required surgery.
He only started seven games in 2024, and after the season ended, his contract expired. Kershaw is now a free agent, but it seems he and L.A. have already made a decision regarding his future.
According to general manager Brandon Gomes, the club is committed to re-signing Kershaw. They want to keep the veteran lefty a Dodger for life.
"GM Brandon Gomes said Dodgers additions this offseason have not changed team's interest in re-signing Clayton Kershaw when he is ready. After foot and knee surgeries, Gomes said Kershaw is progressing in his throwing program but has not thrown off a mound yet" said Bill Plunkett.
Gomes also provided an update on Kershaw's health and status. He is working through a throwing program but has yet to get back on the mound.
Clayton Kershaw has the chance to remain with the Dodgers for his entire career
The Dodgers are the only MLB team Clayton Kershaw knows. They were the ones that selected him with the seventh overall pick in the 2006 draft, just a few picks before Max Scherzer was taken.
So, it makes sense that Kershaw would want to stay. He has the chance to play his entire career with just one team which has become increasingly rare in professional sports.
With both sides having strong mutual interests, there is no need to rush a contract. It could be a while before both sides come to an agreement. However, it will be interesting to see what kind of offer L.A. gives Clayton Kershaw as he is dealing with injuries and the back end of his career.
