The Detroit Tigers should sign Alex Bregman, urged Ben Verlander. Ben, brother of free agent hurler Justin Verlander, took to social media to express his thoughts on what the Tigers’ next acquisition should be.
Earlier this week, the Tigers signed Gleyber Torres to a one-year, $15 million deal. However, Ben Verlander feels that shouldn’t be the last move the Tigers make this offseason. While a great start, Verlander believes the Tigers should pursue Alex Bregman.
Here’s a look at what Verlander posted on X:
“This can NOT be the Tigers big move this offseason. I like it. It’s A move. But can’t be THE move. Go get it done Chris. Go get Bregman.”
The Tigers are rumored to be the frontrunner to land the former Astros third baseman. Reports have surfaced linking the star free agent to Detroit. According to a Sports Illustrated report from December 14, Bregman could be in line for a $216 million deal.
As it stands, the reports are nothing more than mere speculation as Alex Bregman is reportedly on the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox’s radar.
With about six weeks to go until the opening of camps in mid-February, Bregman will need to decide where he will play for the foreseeable future.
AJ Hinch key to Alex Bregman landing in Detroit
As Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report noted, there is a strong link between Alex Bregman and the Detroit Tigers: AJ Hinch. Hinch was the manager of the Houston Astros from 2015 to 2019, which included the controversial 2017 World Series victory. Hinch left the Astros following the inquiry into the allegations regarding the Astros tampering.
Hinch returned to baseball in 2021, taking the helm of the Tigers. Hinch has been pivotal in turning the Tigers around, from a 100-loss team to a playoff contender. With the team poised to continue its success, the Tigers are looking to provide Hinch with more weapons to deploy.
As such, the link and familiarity between Hinch and Bregman cannot be ignored. The history between the two could be just the thing to put the Tigers over the top in the Alex Bregman sweepstakes.
It’s worth pointing out that the Astros should not be ruled out. There could be a chance the Astros and Bregman reach an agreement. While reports indicate that a reunion seems a far-fetched proposition at this point, a reunion could still be on the board until Bregman inks his name somewhere else.
