"Got to wait and see" - Mets manager Carlos Mendoza unsure about Kodai Senga's injury severity as Japanese pitcher is set for MRI

Carlos Mendoza gave Kodai Senga the start on Friday as the New York Mets looked to continue their winning streak against the Atlanta Braves. They took down their divisional foes in extra innings on Thursday and were looking to jump to an early 2-0 lead in the series.

This was Senga's first outing this season after spending much of the year on the IL with a shoulder capsule sprain. He was dominant, but his night was cut short due to another injury.

Senga exited the game during the sixth inning with what the team is describing as a left calf sprain. He suffered the injury while trying to run off the mound to get out of the way of an infield popup.

Mendoza stated to reporters following the game that Senga would have an MRI on Saturday.

"We got to get an MRI, and that's not happening until tomorrow. So, just got to wait and see what we are dealing with here," - said Mendoza

This is disappointing as he was effective ahead of his exit. Senga went 5.1 innings, giving up just two runs on two hits while striking out nine.

"I don't want to sit here and speculate, I don't think there is anything related to the Achilles, but we got to wait and see" - said Mendoza.

Mendoza did not want to speculate, but he believes Senga did not injure his Achilles, which would be a huge break. Achilles injuries are hard to recover from.

While there is no timetable for Kodai Senga's return until at least the MRI on Saturday, the Mets cannot afford him to be on the IL long. They lost Christian Scott earlier in the week, reducing the team's starting rotation to five.

Scott was placed on the 15-day IL on Tuesday with a UCL strain. However, immediate surgery has been ruled out. He will rest for two weeks before throwing again.

Pitchers like Luis Severino and Sean Manaea must step up and hold things down while the team continues their dominance. They are on a five-game winning streak and have jumped the Braves in the National League East with Friday's win.

With a win on Saturday, NY could take the series from Atlanta. Tylor Megill is expected to get the start and keep the momentum going.
