When utility infielder Cavan Biggio was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers on June 12, there was initial reason for hope. The son of a Hall of Famer Craig Biggio, many believed that the move to one of MLB's strongest clubs would represent a fresh start for Biggio, who has struggled to stay on an active roster throughout his career.
While hopes were initially high when the Blue Jays announced the deal, it soon became apparent that the .200 that he hit in 44 games with Toronto would not improve. After hitting .192 with three homers and 10 RBIs in 30 games, Biggio was released by the Dodgers on August 6.
"The Dodgers have designated Cavan Biggio for assignment, "FOX Sports: MLB posted on X.
Spurred on by a mixture of Biggio's poor performance, as well as some new roster additions, there was ultimately no room for the 29-year-old in the Los Angeles Dodgers' lineup. Fans took to social media to have their voices heard regarding the designation for assigment.
Here are a few reactions:
As an MLB freshman with the Toronto Blue Jays, Biggio hit .234/.364/.429 with 16 home runs and 48 RBIs in 100 games to finish fifth in Rookie of the Year Award voting. However, Biggio would never put up numbers like that again. At the time of his trade from the Jays, Biggio had just two home runs and nine RBIs in 44 games.
"Cavan Biggio, we barely knew ya" - mocked a fan.
"Back to Toronto in 2 weeks put the house on it" - was another quip.
"RIP to NH Fishercats legend Cavan biggio" - a fan made reference to Biggio's MiLB career.
Now without a team, Cavan Biggio has big shoes to fill. His father, Craig Biggio, played for the Houston Astros for his entire 20-year career. In addition to hitting a career .281/.363/.433 with 291 home runs and 1175 RBIs, Craig won five Silver Sluggers and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2015. Some fans made reference to Cavan's big-time lineage.
"I think it’s time to bring him home Biggios belong in Houston always been that way" - urged a fan.
"Get him @astros" - suggested another.
"Bring him to Houston" - was another citation of Craig's career.
Bad luck strikes for Cavan Biggio
While Biggio's hitting has indeed been dreadful this season, his performance is not the only reason he parted ways with the team. After spending some time with his sick son, Freddie Freeman is back in the lineup. Additionally, new acquisitions like Michael Kopech and Kevin Kiermaier further complicate things.
Wherever he goes next, it is Biggio alone who will be able to forge his way.
