Miguel Romero has been a revelation for the Cuban team in the World Baseball Classic. He has been phenomenal for his home country and was their best pitcher and perhaps their best player despite not playing in the MLB.
Their run came to an end in the quarterfinals against the defending champion United States, but Cuba's run was still impressive. It was arguably carried by Romero.
He had 13 strikeouts, leading all pitchers in WBC play. He also had a tremendous 2.08 ERA and a 0.02 WHIP. Many players who perform on the world stage are MLB regulars or future stars.
Will Miguel Romero see MLB action?
Romero is the rare World Baseball Classic star that isn't even in the MLB or the NBL. They are the two top leagues for the WBC, but Romero hasn't cracked either.
That may change, though. Romero is currently in the Oakland Athletics organization. He's currently not in their top 30 prospects, but that could change after a thrilling WBC performance.
He's spent time in the minors, five seasons to this point. He hasn't been able to crack the big leagues, but he is only 28 and has plenty of time to continue working towards that.
If his WBC performance is any indicator, the longtime baseball player might be ready for increased action. He was exceptional against the world's best competition, so he may be ready to do so at the MLB level.
The A's aren't expected to compete. In fact, they're expected to be MLB's worst team. Might they give Romero a shot?
