Tyler Glasnow recently said that his Los Angeles Dodgers teammate Shohei Ohtani is an easygoing person, and he is able to communicate without an interpreter nowadays. The Dodgers ace is also impressed at how the unflappable nature of the Japanese superstar helps him navigate through the ups and downs of a long season.
Shohei Ohtani joined the Los Angeles Dodgers for the 2024 season after signing a record-breaking 10-year, $700 million contract last December. A few days later, Tyler Glasnow was added to their roster following a 5-year, $136 million deal with the starting pitcher. The Dodgers are currently at the top of the National League West, and both Ohtani and Glasnow have been selected for the All-Star Game.
On Tuesday, Tyler Glasnow was a guest at the Foul Territory podcast that was conducted within the premises of Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. Glasnow gave his thoughts on Ohtani when he was asked how he deals with the interpreter when he communicates with the two-way star.
"He doesn't have an interpreter anymore. So, he rides in solo to the clubhouse. He speaks great English. He's super easy to talk to," Glasnow said.
"He is super happy-go-lucky all the time. Early on in the season, I was like, 'We'll see how long this is going to last,' because the baseball season is very stressful. And all the stuff that he was going through. But every single day he was like summer camp," he said.
"If you're hitting .230 with a cushion of 28 home runs, I guess that's helpful. But from the beginning of the season, he has always been the same human being. It's really impressive."
Ohtani has not taken the mound this year as he continues his recovery from elbow surgery. Nevertheless, he is hitting .316/.400/.635 and leads the NL in home runs and OPS.
"I think the main goal is to get him ready for the postseason": Tyler Glasnow
In the offseason, the Dodgers also offered the biggest ever contract to a pitcher when they signed Yoshinobu Yamamoto to a 12-year, $325 million deal. The Japanese pitcher is presently on the 60-day IL as he continues to recover from an arm injury.
During his time on the Foul Territory podcast, Tyler Glasnow also shed light on the recovery period for the 25-year-old, who is known to use a javelin in training.
"I think he was throwing a javelin before, but I saw him throwing a baseball. And he looks good. I don't know his progression or anything like that. I think the main goal is to get him ready for the playoffs, so I don't know if they are going to rush him. but he looks good. I know he feels good because I've been talking to him," he said.
Meanwhile, Tyler Glasnow was also placed on the IL earlier this month, but he is expected to return to the starting rotation in about a week.
