On Thursday, Logan Webb pitched a gem to help the San Francisco Giants avoid getting swept by the Atlanta Braves in a four-game series. Webb threw 7.2 scoreless innings, which were further carried by relievers Tyler Rogers and Spencer Bivens, to blank the Braves 6-0.
Webb's 104 pitches resulted in seven strikeouts and just one walk. It was a "must-win" game, as manager Bob Melvin said, while marveling over Webb's masterclass.
“It really was kind of a must-win for us. Those are the guys you want on the mound in those types of games, and he came as advertised,” Melvin said, per ESPN.
Webb also garnered praise from the opposing manager.
“You can tell when he came out, he was on mission,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said.
“He was going to give their bullpen a break, and he did. And he was efficient. Very, very competitive guy with really good stuff. And with that sinker, really throws a lot of strikes. He’s a tough ride.”
That came after a 12-3 drubbing the other night. And to shut those Braves hitters down says a lot about the kind of season Logan Webb is having. In his last four starts, he has only allowed two earned runs over 29.1 innings.
The win helped the Giants improve to 62-62 on the season while also making sure they did so against the Braves, their competitor for a Wild Card spot.
Complete book perfect game, says Logan Webb
The offense boiling up and pitching putting up blanks on scorecard is a recipe for success, according to Logan Webb, who shut down his opposition on Thursday.
“Whenever as a starter you get a lead, it’s your job to maintain it,” Webb said. “The guys came out swinging today and playing great defense. It was a recipe for success for sure.”
Apart from Logan Webb, the Giants hitters put up consistent hits, including home runs from Casey Schmitt and Grant McCray.
The win puts the Giants 3.5 games behind from a Wild Card spot. The Arizona Diamondbacks, the San Diego Padres and the Atlanta Braves are in the Wild Card spot positions, facing stiff competition from the Cincinnati Reds, the Giants and the New York Mets.
