Steve Cohen's New York Mets have splashed a lot of cash, but they might be one big move away from securing an all-rounded championship-caliber team. That move could see the Mets signing third baseman Alex Bregman.
The New York Mets are without a primary first baseman. Pete Alonso, who's a free agent, since his debut with the team in 2019, had manned the position. The Mets have offered a three-year $90 million contract to Alonso but are yet to hear back from him.
Meanwhile, they could look at their other options. MLB Network Radio host Jeff Joyce said that Queens' club could be more suited to signing Alex Bregman. The two-time All-Star would give a balance of base-reaching abilities, something a hard-hitting lineup featuring Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto, Mark Vientos and Brandon Nimmo would require.
Moreover, he also said that if Bregman slots in at first, Viento, their primary 3B could be shifted to the other corner.
"I'd rather have Bregman at third, Vientos at first, if I'm the Mets, versus Alonso," Joyce said. "Yeah. Now look, Alonso is your guy. The fans love him. Bregman was a part of those Astros teams, so that there's that to deal with. But I think there's more versatility with Bregman there in in the lineup where he could give you some good at bats.
"Like, I mean, he could hit in front of Soto. He could hit behind Soto. Do you like Lindor Soto, Bregman, Nimmo, Vientos, or do you like Lindor, Soto, Alonso, Nimmo, Vientos, as you know five better... He's not gonna hit for as much power, but, but he's gonna give you better at bats, I think in big spots."
Mets will have to battle a big field in line to sign Alex Bregman
Not every offseason do teams get to pick a Gold Glove-winning third baseman who's also a career .272 hitter. Alex Bregman's distinguished CV and being part of two title-winning seasons at the Astros helps his cause, as even in January there will be at least four teams, including the Mets, waiting to acquire his services.
As reported, two American League clubs with two former Astros staff as their managers, Detroit Tigers (A.J. Hinch) and Boston Red Sox (Alex Cora) are looking to reunite with Bregman. Meanwhile, the San Francisco Giants, who missed out on Corbin Burnes, could use that cash to lure Bregman to California.
