Oakland Athletics slugger Jacob Wilson is currently in his first season in the big leagues. He was the sixth overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft, and many insiders are high on his game.
Wilson debuted on July 19 but experienced a hamstring injury while rounding the bases. He was placed on the 10-day IL, and there is no timetable for his return.
Despite the injury, the front office is enamored with what Wilson brings to the table. Assistant general manager Billy Owens has compared him to a legendary New York Yankees player.
"When you watch him at the plate, he looks like Derek Jeter, honestly. I mean, his technique, he reminds me of the captain," said Owens.
That is quite the comparison, as Derek Jeter had a wonderful 20-year career in the Bronx. From the way Wilson can hit all sides of the field and low strikeout rate, Ownes cannot help but make the comparison.
"He hits the ball to all fields, he's relentless, he doesn't strike out, the power is going to emergelater on" - said Owens.
We will have to wait and see if that comes true, but with his scouting report, he could have a very successful career in the big leagues. The Athletics got a good one with this young slugger.
Taking a closer look at Athletics rookie Jacob Wilson
Jacob Wilson came into the season as the Athletics' top-rated prospect. He is the son of former All-Star Jack Wilson who enjoyed a 12-year career in the big leagues as a shortstop.
Wilson played his college ball at Grand Canyon University and made quite a name for himself. He left GCU with an eye-popping 4.4% strikeout rate.
He has a great eye at the plate, and his bat-to-ball skills are out of this world. There are some concerns over his lower exit velocity, but he has time to improve on that.
Defensively, there are not many concerns about his game. He has great hands, a great first step, and great instincts as an infielder. He also possesses an above-average arm and can make deep throws to first with ease.
If Wilson can work on his hard-hit rate, he could be a force to be reckoned with. Fans will want to keep an eye on this young slugger when he gets healthy and comes off the IL.
