The Atlanta Braves have extended Alex Anthopoulos' contract as their general manager and president of baseball operations until 2031. His salary has not been disclosed yet, but Anthopoulos has agreed to stay with the team for multiple seasons.
On the “Power Ally” radio show, Jim Duquette and Jim Bowden, two former GMs, recently praised Anthopoulos for his contribution and dedication to the Braves. They also noted that he has made the team one of the best in the league.
“It is a massive commitment to Alex Anthopoulos, who, by the way, has been fantastic as the GM president of baseball ops,” Duquette said.
“Great offensive defense, very, very well-rounded roster year in and route. I'll tell you what, the roster does not have any real hole or weakness to speak of this year,” he added.
Bowden expressed his disappointment that Anthopoulos was only offered a seven-year deal, believing that he deserves more, given his plan to build up the team’s roster.
“I thought it would be a ten-year deal. I think it's disappointing he only got seven. This is his team. He's put it together. They've given him the freedom to sign his players long term,” Bowden said.
Bowden also praised Anthopoulos for his successful trades of Sean Murphy and Matt Olson, which gave Atlanta a strong offense.
“The trades that he's made to get Sean Murphy, Matt Olson, just absolutely incredible deals that have worked completely in the favor of Atlanta,” he added.
Alex Anthopoulos is the only individual to win the Executive of the Year Award in both leagues, and Bowden believes he should be paid around $50 million or more. He also ranks the Atlanta Braves as the best team in the league.
“He has been one of the best executives in this generation. He deserves to be one of the highest paid… I'm assuming it's somewhere between 50 and $70 million… If you want me to rank all the major league rosters top to bottom, I got the Braves one out of one,” Bowden said.
History of Atlanta Braves under Alex Anthopoulos
The Atlanta Braves hired Alex Anthopoulos as their executive vice president and general manager in 2017 when he was with the Toronto Blue Jays. He was promoted to his current role in 2020. Under his leadership, the Braves have been dominant in the East Division of the National League.
Anthopoulos has led the Braves to the NL East pennant for six consecutive years since 2018. They have also been a constant participant in the postseason during his tenure, even winning the World Series in 2021.
The Braves have been consistently winning 100 games in recent seasons. With the return of Charlie Morton and the addition of Chris Sale to their rotation, they are expected to have another amazing season.
