Milwaukee Brewers reliever Devin Williams produced a remarkable outing on Tuesday evening to help his team seal a slender 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium. Newly recruited Brewers pitcher Frankie Montas lauded Williams' indomitable composure on the mound to get the last two outs, even though the Cardinals had the go-ahead run in scoring position.
The Brewers held a one-run lead when Williams entered the game and struck out the first batter he faced. He allowed a single to Brendon Donovan, who advanced to third base on a double from Nolan Arenado. Williams then chose to intentionally walk the left-handed Lars Nootbaar, thereby loading up the bases and sending the winning run onto second base.
Nevertheless, Williams remained calm throughout the situation and showed his mettle as one of the elite closers in the MLB. He struck out Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Gorman in succession to leave the bases loaded and take his team past the finish line for a nerve-wracking win.
After the game, Montas spoke to Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel about Williams' performance.
“He's a cold-blooded guy, man. He's a fearless dude. Anytime that you're in the position to win, he comes into the game. You feel pretty good about winning the ball game, for sure,” Montas said.
“When you have a guy like that, you're not nervous at all. He has not been a two-time Reliever of the Year for no reason. When that guy's in the game, you feel pretty good about winning the ball game.
"Like I said earlier, he's a cold-blooded dude. Like, he ain’t afraid of nothing. You know, bases loaded, he goes, 'I got this.' He’s Devin Williams for a reason,” he added.
Montas started the game for the Brewers on the night and notched his first win for his new team after arriving from the Cincinnati Reds at the trade deadline. He enjoyed one of his best outings in a difficult year, allowing only a hit and a walk from seven innings with three strikeouts.
Devin Williams making a strong comeback since returning from IL
Devin Williams won the National League Rookie of the Year in 2020 and was selected to the All-Star Game in each of the previous two seasons. He had agreed to a one-year, $7.25 million extension with the Milwaukee Brewers at the start of the 2024 campaign. However, the 29-year-old was moved to the IL during spring training with two stress fractures in his back.
Williams completed his return to the team on July 28 and has now picked up four saves from his eight outings this season along with an ERA under 1.30. He will be heading into salary arbitration at the end of the year if the Brewers do not comply with the $10.5 million option for 2025.
