Craig Breslow, Chief Baseball Officer of the Boston Red Sox, recently talked about shortstop Trevor Story's return to action. The 31-year-old has been on the injured list since April 5.
Story sustained an injury to his left shoulder while making a defensive play in the field, diving to stop a ball hit by the Los Angeles Angels' Mike Trout. Initially feared to be out until 2025, recent developments open the door to Story making a return this year.
Speaking to MLB Network Radio, Breslow mentioned how the shortstop could be back on the field sooner than anticipated.
"We had been talking about a timeline in terms of years, [we would see Trevor] returning in 2025, but based on the progress he's had over the past 4-6 weeks, he's talking about getting back on the field in 2024. That's incredibly exciting."
Detailing his next steps on the journey back to full fitness, Craig added:
"He's got a big milestone on Monday, when he's set to take batting practice. He's making a ton of progress in a really short amount of time, so it would not surprise anyone if he's back on the field in 2024."
Red Sox swept by Houston Astros in home series
The Boston Red Sox lost their third game on the trot, as the Houston Astros completed the sweep at Fenway Park on Sunday. The hosts currently trail the Kansas City Royals, Minnesota Twins and New York Yankees in the race for the American League Wildcard spots.
The game started off on a sour note for the Boston side, as starting pitcher James Paxton was forced off the mound after just five pitches with a calf strain.
Things did not get much better for the hosts as the Astros went on to take the lead in the third inning and blew the game wide open with a 5-run top fifth. It was a slope that proved too steep for the Red Sox on the night.
On Monday, the Red Sox invite the Texas Rangers to Fenway Park as they continue their homestand. Fans will be hoping the home side can put the last series' events behind them and bounce back quickly, as the race for a playoff spot intensifies with every passing game.
