The Baltimore Orioles outfielder Heston Kjerstad has been pulled from the lineup and is currently placed on the 7-day concussion injured list. This happened a day after Kjerstad laid flat down on the ground for some time after being hit by the 96.8-mph sinker by Clay Holmes.
This incident spurred a brawl on the field on Friday night as the Orioles manager Brandon Hyde screamed at the Yankees' dugout for the injury of one of his players. The benches were cleared and even the relievers of both teams were seen running out from the bullpen.
It was nothing less than chaos and a new rivalry between the Orioles and the Yankees took birth that night. However, the Yankees manager Aaron Boone stated that he had a conversation with Hyde later and everything was "fine."
Before the Orioles lost to the Yankees by a 6-1 score, Heston Kjerstad was part of the lineup. He was even announced to be the starting left-fielder and the No. 6 batter for the Saturday game. Just 90 minutes before the first pitch, he was scratched from the main roster.
Andy Kostka of the Baltimore Banner announced that Heston Kjerstad wasn't feeling ready to get back on the field, as part of the pregame warmups. So, in his place, they instantly called upon Kyle Stowers from Triple-A Norfolk as their outfielder.
The New York Yankees hoped for the speedy recovery of Heston Kjerstad
The Camden Yards wasn't an ideal playing surface on a Friday night due to a heavy downpour. Pitchers struggled for grip, while batters fought to maintain control of their bats throughout the rain-soaked final inning.
For that reason, Clay Holmes couldn't control the strange pitch in the ninth inning against Heston Kjerstad. He, himself, admitted that it wasn't his regular sinker, and he had no intention of hurting his opponent.
"You're never trying to hit somebody in the head up high like that. I hope Heston's OK from that. Definitely hope that he's all good tomorrow,” Holmes said. “I was trying to throw up a front-door sinker there, and it just cut. The movement wasn't my normal sinker, and [I] just kind of pulled it."
Even the Yankees manager Aaron Boone has spoken on the matter, and he also claimed to understand the outburst of Brandon Hyde over the critical impact suffered by his team's player.
“Look, I understand him coming out and being hot. One of your guys gets hit like that, it's scary,” Boone said. “So I understand that.”
However, Kjerstad decided to trust his instincts and agreed to sit out for the next seven days. Hopefully, he gets back on the field pretty soon.
