Philadelphia Phillies right-fielder Nick Castellanos had an altercation with Edwin Uceta in Tuesday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays when Edwin Uceta threw a pitch that hit Castellanos in the hip.
Right after that, Castellanos threw his bat and charged at Uceta, the benches cleared on both sides and the field was filled with the teams' players and coaches.
Nick Castellanos compared this behavior of Edwin Uceta with a tantrum of a 2-year-old, as getting hit for the pitchers is just a part of the game and getting personal about it doesn't seem appropriate.
The game was tied at four points and Uceta gave away three earned runs in just 0.1 innings after stepping up. So it was believed that Uceta intended to hit Nick Castellanos out of frustration. Analyst also reported that this was also the hardest throw of his career.
"According to mlb.com, The pitch Uceta threw to hit Castellanos was the hardest throw of his MLB career," Dan Roche tweeted.
The Phillies fans were enraged by the thought of this and slammed Edwin Uceta for such a response to getting hit.
"This is high school ball level immaturity pitcher should be punished," one fan said.
"Man was big mad," another fan stated.
Other Phillies fans also shared the same sentiment about Castellanos getting hit by Edwin Uceta's pitch.
"Uceta needs to be suspended. Cash should have pulled him. He was in full meltdown and we’re lucky Uceta had control of that ball. Otherwise Castellanos could have had his year ended due to a hissy fit on the mound," one fan remarked.
"96 to the hip - idk how these guys are able to walk that stuff off," one fan mentioned.
"To the surprise of absolutely no one who watched the entire sequence of events," one fan opined.
"Lol what a dork," one fan wrote.
Edwin Uceta has been suspended for three games by MLB for hitting Nick Castellanos
Major League Baseball has taken a firm decision against Edwin Uceta this Wednesday, where they have suspended the Tampa Bay Rays pitcher for three games, as per Matt Gelb of The Athletic.
However, Mark Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times has mentioned that the ban has been reduced to two games now, which will begin Wednesday. On top of this, Rays manager Kevin Cash has also been suspended for one game by the league.
Uceta, however, has spoken on the matter where he has claimed that his throw wasn't intentional.
"There was a lot going on, so I was just keeping my eye on Castellanos,” Uceta said through Navarro. “Again, I didn’t do it on purpose, but I understand the frustration they had. I’ve never been a part of a situation like that before."
His first 20 pitches didn't work out well in the eighth inning and many believed that Uceta had thrown the pitch because he was irritated.
