Baltimore Orioles legend Jim Palmer was disappointed after their NFL counterparts fell out of title contention in the divisional playoffs against the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Divisional Round. The Ravens fell 27-25 on Sunday with an unsuccessful last minute 2-point attempt with question marks over their call to pass instead of rushing to the end line.
After the game, Palmer shared his reaction on X. The Hall of Famer wasn't entirely satisfied with the effort put in by the Ravens stating that it is hard to win titles, be it in the MLB or the NFL, if the team doesn't put its best foot forward.
"Painful loss for the Ravens. MLB, NFL, hard to win if you don’t play your best. Unfortunately, another football life lesson for the Ravens, and another good season that could have been great," Palmer wrote.
The Ravens haven't won the Super Bowl since 2012 despite being one of the more consistent teams during that spell, reaching the playoffs seven times.
Palmer also compared the Ravens to the Seattle Seahawks who were defeated by the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl in 2015. Similar to the two-point attempt on Sunday, the Seahawks were also unable to convert a touchdown from the one-yard line. They tried to pass the ball instead of rushing with it and the play was intercepted.
"Never forget the 2015 Super Bowl when the Seahawks were trailing the Patriots 28-24 and were on the Patriots 2 yard line, 20 seconds left, with Marshawn Lynch, the best running back in the NFL, and they passed and Malcolm Butler intercepted and the Patriots win," Palmer recalled in another tweet.
Jim Palmer questioned the big money contracts handed to starting pitchers
As a current sportscaster and commentator for the Orioles, Jim Palmer also often shares his two cents on baseball. In December, he questioned the size of the contracts the starting pitchers have gotten in recent years and compared it to their longevity on the mound.
He referenced Gerrit Cole, Justin Verlander, Corbin Burnes, among others and hinted at their injuries.
As a pitcher himself, Palmer may feel that starters are overvalued in this day and age. He had pitched more than 300 innings in four seasons but these days, it is rare for pitchers to reach 200 innings in a season. The stress on velocity has severely reduced the overall workload a starter can take throughout the season.
