The 2022 season could not have gone much better for the Houston Astros, as the polarizing team walked their way through the regular season and postseason to win the World Series.
The title was the second in the franchise's history, with the first coming during the controversial 2017 season, headlined by the team's sign-stealing scandal.
"Highly recommend Evan Drellich’s book on the Astros. It’s about so much more than 2017 (it doesn’t even get there until about midway through the book). Great reporting on the culture behind the Astros from 2011 to now." - Matt Young
Not only did the Astros win the World Series, which is the main objective for every team, but the title was much more than just a championship victory. Many within the organization felt that the 2022 World Series helped exercise some of the demons that have plagued the team since the sign-stealing scandal.
While some fans will never forgive the Houston Astros for cheating during the 2017 season, and rightfully so, many felt that the 2022 title legitimized the Astros organization.
Entering the 2023 campaign, the Astros will have a target on their backs yet again, and while the team will be ready to defend their crown, they will still have another opportunity to celebrate their 2022 title.
"Look, up in the sky it's a bird, it's a plane, no actually it's 450 ft of World Series Glory! Looking back at it now, the @Phillies were never going to beat the destiny @astros! Spring training can't come soon enough! Personally, I can't wait for the ring ceremony!" - Mike Mata
The Astros' scheduled opening day matchup with the Chicago White Sox at Minute Maid Park on March 30, 2023 has now turned into a primetime affair that will exclusively air on ESPN, the network announced.
The telecast begins at 6 p.m. CT with a one-hour "Baseball Tonight" program show, followed by the MLB Opening Night game. The Houston Astros' World Series banner-raising ceremony and festivities are airing within the telecast.
A look at the Houston Astros' offseason
While the story of the offseason for the Astros may have been the departure of Justin Verlander, the team did make waves across the league by landing former National League MVP Jose Abreu in free agency.
Aside from Abreu, the Houston Astros were able to keep the bulk of the core roster together, hanging on to the likes of Michael Brantley and Cristian Javier for the upcoming season.
While they may no longer have Verlander, the Astros will likely enter the season with one of the strongest rosters in the MLB.
