Puerto Rico has participated in all five editions of the World Baseball Classic (WBC) since the tournament's inception in 2006. Despite never winning the championship, Puerto Rico has been a consistently strong performer, with two runner-up finishes and a third-place finish.
In the inaugural 2006 tournament, the country advanced to the second round of play after finishing first in their pool, but lost two out of three games which led to their elimination from the tournament.
In the 2009 tournament, Puerto Rico again advanced to the second round after winning their group once again, and this time, won two out of three games to advance to the semifinals.
In the second round, they won their first game against the US, but went on to lose their next game against Venezuela and then suffered another defeat in their second encounter with Team USA which resulted in their elimination from the tournament.
In the 2013 tournament, Puerto Rico once again advanced through the group stages of the tournament and went on to reach the semifinals. In the semifinals, they faced off against Japan and defeated them 3-1 to book their place in the final for the first time in history. However, they lost 0-3 to the Dominican Republic and had to settle for the silver medal.
In the most recent 2017 tournament, Puerto Rico had its best showing yet, reaching the championship game undefeated after defeating the Dominican Republic, the United States, and the Netherlands in the second round and semifinals. In the championship game, they faced off against the United States once again, but lost by a score of 8-0 to finish as runners-up.
