The Oakland Athletics have played their last game in the Bay Area before moving out of the Oakland Coliseum as part of their relocation to Las Vegas by 2028. The long, drawn out relocation process has angered many local Athletics fans, who are distraught at not having a ballclub to root for in their city.
The team's ownership for a long time sought approval for public funding from the city of Oakland for the creation of a new ballpark in the city, beacuse the conditions of play in the Coliseum had deteriorated over the years.
After a lengthy process, they finally made the announcement to move out of town and signed an agreement to build a stadium on the Las Vegas Strip. The move was met with immense backlash with fans constantly protesting against it.
The A's were able to fill out the stadium for the final home game of the season which they won, 3-2, against the Texas Rangers. Many fans came in with demonstrations and posters about the rich memories the place had for so many. One of the fans was seen holding up a placard that read:
"Ted Lasso S3EP 10 45:40-48:51"
In this particular episode of the hit comedy show, Hannah Weddingham's character Rebecca Wilson, owner of the fictional AFC Richmond, is at a meeting with other club owners for the possibility of formation of a new league purely for profit-making purposes.
She questions the greed of the owners that has driven them to such a meeting. An emotional monologue ensues where she describes the beauty of football.
Oakland fans dish out insults toward John Fisher after Rangers game
The Athletics tried their best to make their final game seem more about celebration and less about disappointment with special first-pitch ceremonies, songs being played, and special messages from the team's staff and players after the game.
This included A's manager Mark Kotsay, who gave an emotional goodbye and thanked the fans for their undying support.
He led the stadium in "Let's go Oakland" that soon transitioned into a raucous "F**k John Fisher" chant.
