In an interview on the "Chicks in the Office" podcast in July, supermodel Kate Upton opened up about the unexpected realities as the wife of MLB star Justin Verlander.
The Houston Astros ace and Upton have been married since 2017, and the latter admitted she had no idea what she was getting herself into when she fell in love with him.
"Being a baseball wife is absolutely insane. This schedule is wild, it’s so long, I didn’t know [...] I accidentally fell in love. I had no idea that there were this many games," Upton said.
Upton was referring to the marathon 162-game regular season that stretches from late March to October, not including Spring Training and the postseason, which can last an additional month.
Upton also explained that baseball does not have many days off like many other sports:
"No consecutive off-days, only Mondays and Thursdays."
Upton shared how the demanding schedule often means long periods without seeing her husband, especially during the intense playoff period.
"I’m like, I haven’t seen my husband in months, they better win."
These statements paint an interesting picture of the emotional rollercoaster of balancing excitement with the strain of the high-stakes career of an MLB star.
Kate Upton also talked about how hard it is for her to watch Verlander perform under the spotlight.
"To watch someone you love out there nd have no control...it was a totally new experience," Upton said.
Upton explained that she is often nervous about wanting Justin Verlander to succeed but also from a desire for him to feel good about his performance.
"He‘s my husband, and I want him to come home happy, not disappointed in how he played or what happened."
Kate Upton and Justin Verlander have shared a life for 10 years.
Kate Upton and Justin Verlander first met in 2012 during a commercial shoot, but their relationship blossomed in 2014. The couple got engaged in 2016 and married in 2017, just days after Verlander won his first World Series ring with the Houston Astros. Together, they share a daughter, Genevieve, born in 2018.
Despite the challenges of balancing family life with the demanding MLB schedule, Upton remains Verlander’s biggest supporter both at home and in the stands.
